Pilates and Yoga Fusion
When I started studying Pilates in 2004, I was still working at a desk job at least 4 hours per day. I was intrigued with Pilates, as I was also a dance instructor on the side, and knew that many of my dance colleagues were involved with learning the discipline. I noticed within a few short weeks I was sitting much taller at my desk. I went on the become a Certified Stott Pilates instructor and know through training that the following benefits are achieved through Pilates:
· Stronger core muscles
· Better posture
· Better breathing which integrates with movement and relaxes central nervous system
· Better alignment
· Better articulation/mobility of the spine muscles
· Enhanced mind-body awareness
I decided to research what others in the medical/health field say. Here is a quote from WebMD:
“If you are looking to strengthen your abdomen and pelvis as well as maintain good posture, then Pilates is for you. It also has a strong mind/body connection, so you may like it if you enjoy yoga but need a more intense core workout…..If you have arthritis, a strength-training program such as Pilates is a very important part of your exercise program. Research shows that a combination of aerobic exercise and strength training can help curb symptoms, maintain balance, keep joints flexible, and help you get to an ideal body weight….Ask your doctor if Pilates would be a good choice if you have chronic low back pain. It will help strengthen your weak core muscles that may be adding to your pain.”
I love the choreography of Pilates which is in line with my dance training, and that you can enhance the movements with props and slight modifications. I also enjoy the flow of yoga, which is a wonderful way to enhance balance, flexibility and presence. The integration of the two makes a great class, especially if you can only come to an organized class once or twice per week.
Join us starting this Tuesday from 9 to 10:00 am at Dragonfly Wellness Center for the start of our 8 week session (Drop-ins for previous Pilates students only). We look forward to seeing you!
